What is Addiction?

RISK/PROTECTIVE FACTORS

Some things reduce the chances that a person will become addicted. Theses are called protective factors. Other things increase the chances that a person will develop an addiction. These are called risk factors.

Protective Factors

Strong family bonds
Parental involvement
Clear rules and consistent enforcement
Success in school
Involvement in community activities and organizations
Perceived disapproval of substance use by family, work, school, peers and community

Risk Factors

Chaotic home environment
Family history of substance abuse or mental illness
Ineffective parenting
Children with difficult temperaments or conduct disorders
Lack of parent-child attachment and nurturing
Excessively shy or aggressive behavior
Poor school performance
Poor social coping skills
Peers displaying deviant behavior
Perceived approval of substance use by family, work, school, peers, community
