What is Addiction?

Treatment/Recovery

Are you or someone that you know battling addiction? Remember, recovery is possible. Recovery from addiction is a process which may include some relapses. Occasional relapses should not be seen as failure.

Effective treatment should include behavioral therapy like counseling, cognitive therapy or psychotherapy. It may also include medication.

Therapy needs to be targeted and needs to take into account age, race, culture, language, sexual orientation, gender, pregnancy status, parental responsibilities, housing and employment status, physical disability and history of physical or sexual abuse.

Addiction is a chronic disorder. Short-term, one-time treatments usually don’t work in the long run. In most cases, treatment is a long process. Be patient and stick with the treatment plan. It will work.

Family and friends of individuals with an addiction also experience a number of negative effects of the addiction. Friends and family need support to help them cope with the addiction and to help them to help their loved one through the recovery process.
